Self-Employed: What You Need to Be Your Own Boss

Self-employment can be such a lucrative opportunity. It comes with the freedom to choose when and where to work. You get control over your time and who you work with. Unlike in employment where you have a fixed salary for years, you can dictate how much you earn when you are your own boss. But, being your own boss also comes with a lot of responsibility. You transition from answering to somebody else to being in charge of everything. Keep in mind also that businesses take time to grow. It might take a while to see some growth. Before diving into self-employment, it is important to be well prepared and have a plan. Here is what you need to succeed.

A Viable Idea

You probably have a business idea that you want to execute. But, have you stopped to ask yourself whether there is a gap for it? To succeed, you need to sell something that people are actually willing to buy. You need to conduct research to validate your idea. Determine who your customer is - the preferences and pain points. You might also want to look at the competition. What gaps are they not filling? What you find out can help you package your business idea in a way that people can buy.

If you want to go the freelancer way, you need to identify platforms where you can find clients for your type of work. Then create a portfolio, set your rates, and start applying for roles.

All the Important Skills

Besides having knowledge in your niche, you need other technical skills to succeed in self-employment. They include:

  • Time management – You will have so many things to accomplish on your own as a self-employed person. Having impeccable time management skills can help you manage your time well to make sure you aren’t running behind on anything

  • Financial management – Your business success depends on how well you can manage your finances. You may not have the resources to hire an expert when starting out. Learning financial management skills can come in handy for you. While it can seem like an uphill task, you can do it with the right mindset and tools. You can find simple business banking solutions that allow you to track your income and payments. Besides reducing paperwork, such solutions provide a secure platform to keep your financial data

  • People skills – Being your own boss means having to deal with customers, employees and other stakeholders. You will need strong people skills to build and nurture relationships and communicate effectively if you are to attract and retain important people in your business

  • Business management – Knowing how to run a business is key to success. You might want to take a few courses to equip yourself with the knowledge needed to manage different aspects of a business. Using a business credit card can also help you separate your business and personal expenses.

Set up Compliantly

One thing you need to keep in mind is that you need to meet legal requirements when running a business. The last thing you need is to find yourself in a legal mess that can cripple your business. Do a bit of research on all the permits required to run your type of business. Be sure to look at self-employed tax requirements as well. Since legal and compliance matters can be complex, consider working with an expert in the area. You can contract a lawyer and an accountant to help you set up your business the right way.

Mentorship

Going the self-employment route without proper guidance can be an uphill task. You need to have people who can give you advice and insights on different things. A mentor and using a help desk software can help you avoid costly mistakes along the way, maximizing your chances of success.

Start networking with people that you would want to learn from. Approach them and request for their mentorship. You can also follow them on their platforms to learn from what they share with their followers.

Nonetheless,  the most successful businesses start in coworking spaces, so it would be beneficial to look for such space nearby and then book a workstation or join their mentorship programs, workshops, or events via the coworking space app.

Self-care

Another thing that you need to keep in mind in self-employment is that you are your biggest asset. Your success depends on how productive you are. That is why you need to prioritize taking care of yourself. Take breaks to rejuvenate and calm your mind throughout the day. Make sure to get enough sleep every night. Taking time off from work can also be helpful. Establish clear boundaries between work and life. Exercise regularly and eat healthy meals. Moreover, don’t forget to socialize and make time for your other passions.

Conclusion

Being your own boss can be exciting and fulfilling. But, it can also be demanding and draining. Be very prepared on what you are getting into before taking the plunge. Also, be sure that your idea can sell and acquire the necessary skills. Find someone who can guide you along. In addition, media contact database, which is a valuable tool for businesses and organizations, could help you to effectively communicate with journalists, editors, and other members of the media. Most importantly take care of yourself.
